History of the Department

Veterinary Medicine at the Odessa Agricultural Institute was established in 1938. The disciplines “clinical diagnostics” and “therapy” were taught at other clinical departments by associate professors YL. Shchepotin, IN Guvato, N.S. Guminsky, B.F. Morozhkin. In 1962, the Department of Therapy and Clinical Diagnostics was established, headed by its doctor of sciences, Professor Movsum-Zade K.K., who worked until 1988. Under his leadership, a school of clinicians-therapists of the south of Ukraine was established. His students are Professor V.A. Berestov, Associate Professors G.M. Chekanovich, V.D Ershov, K.A Sukhin, V.V. Nikolenko, Yu.O. Chubov, M.M. Islamov, S.I. Ulyzko.

The research work of the department was aimed at identifying morpho-functional changes in newborns, studying common metabolic diseases in animals (ketosis, osteodystrophy), acute digestive disorders, respiratory diseases of young animals of southern Ukraine. Treatment and prevention measures have been developed, which reduced their incidence by 2-3 times. From 1988 to 1998 the department was headed by Associate Professor K.G. Niedzwiecki, who co-authored the textbooks on Clinical Diagnosis of Animal Diseases and Workshop on Therapy. The following subjects were taught at the department: therapy, clinical diagnostics of animal diseases, pharmacology, pathophysiology. From February 1998 to 2003 the department was headed by Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Worker of Science and Technology OI Sukmansky, who co-authored the textbook “Pathological physiology”, “Internal animal diseases”, “Veterinary hematology”. From 2003 to 2016 the department was headed by Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Yu.O. Chubov. Under his leadership, a new direction in veterinary medicine is being developed – biological therapy (homeopathy and homotoxicology). In 2009 Yu.O. Chubov was issued a textbook “Non-traditional methods of animal therapy”. Also, in 2009, Yu.O. Chubov (co-authored) published 2 volumes of the directory Veterinary Drugs. Since March 2016 the department has been headed by Ph.D. Ulyzko S.I.

Associate Professor Ulyzko S.I. on the co-authorship has developed a modern classification of anemia in animals, and he is a co-author of the manual “Veterinary Hematology” and the textbook “Clinical diagnosis of animal diseases”. The department has an initiative theme “Investigation of pathogenesis of diseases caused by metabolic disorders in agricultural and domestic animals in the south of Ukraine and the development of methods for their diagnosis, treatment and prevention”, state registration number 0117U005234, and is engaged in the development of diagnostic methods, treatment and prevention of internal diseases of agricultural and domestic animals using traditional and non-traditional therapy. The staff of the department work productively in the training of highly qualified veterinary medicine specialists. At the department senior students actively participate in student scientific circles. Each year, the students of the group make presentations at the student scientific conferences of the ODAU. The teachers of the department pay considerable attention to the educational work with the students. The main focus of this work is the education of students of patriotism, humanity and decency, worthy citizens of Ukraine.
