Pilot Research Results on the Potential of Algae for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth to Be Presented in Odesa

On 31 August 2026, an information and awareness-raising event will be held in Odesa to present the results of pilot activities implemented under Activity 1.3 of the international project “Harnessing Algae Power for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth – AlgaeRevive” (BSB00091).

The project is co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme.

The event is organised by the Private institution “Educational and research institute of biotechnology and biosafety” at the request of Odesa State Agrarian University, a project partner of AlgaeRevive. The event will be held in a blended format in Odesa and will bring together representatives of the scientific community, students, young researchers and other interested participants.

Within Activity 1.3, a set of pilot studies has been carried out to assess the potential of different algae from the Black Sea region for practical and industrial applications, particularly in the area of reducing pollution of aquatic ecosystems.

The event will present the results of research on the potential of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, including cultivation technologies adapted to the conditions of the Ukrainian steppe zone and the influence of biologically active substances on its development.

Particular attention will be paid to research on Chlorella vulgaris as a natural biostimulant and its effects on the germination, development and productivity of agricultural crops.

Participants will also learn about the results of research into the potential of multicellular algae occurring in the Odesa region, the possibilities of obtaining biologically active substances, extraction technologies and prospects for practical application. An important area of the pilot research has been the investigation of the potential use of algae to reduce pollution of aquatic ecosystems. The event will present the results of studies on the ability of Chlorella vulgaris to remove pollutants from the aquatic

environment and the prospects for using algae as a nature-based solution.

A separate session will focus on the transition from scientific research to practical application, including the results of the pilot activities, recommendations obtained and prospects for the industrial use of algae.

An important component of the event will be a practical training session for young researchers and students, “Research on the Effectiveness of Using Algae to Reduce Pollution.” Participants will learn about the main approaches to studying the properties of algae, as well as the specific features and importance of working with equipment purchased within the relevant project and the relevance of its use for assessing the potential application of algae to improve the condition of aquatic ecosystems.

The involvement of students and young researchers is an important practical aspect of the implementation of the AlgaeRevive pilot activities. Young scientific participants have been involved in laboratory research and familiarisation with field pilot activities.

The final part of the event will include the panel discussion “Algae for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth: Opportunities, Challenges and Prospects”, as well as discussion of the results and exchange of experience.

Particular attention will be paid to opportunities for further involvement of young researchers in research and the practical application of algae-based technologies, as well as to the potential use of the obtained results for pollution reduction, improvement of aquatic ecosystems and the development of blue growth.

The project is being implemented between September 3, 2024, and March 2, 2027, and has a total value of €1470899.04 of which

€1329809.13 is funding provided by the European Union through the (Interreg VI-B) NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme. As a partner, Odesa State Agrarian University partner eligible budget is €219564,00.
