Within the project “SMS-RO-UA: Development of screening and monitoring systems for emerging diseases and prevention of cross-border epidemics in the current context” (ROUA00136), five protocols of step-by-step instructions for identifying the sources of pathogens and preventing their spread for joint preventive and liquidation measures have been developed. The documents were prepared under Activity 1.5 “Increasing awareness on emerging diseases and the prevention of cross-border epidemics” (Deliverable D.1.5.1). The project is funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania-Ukraine Programme 2021-2027.
The protocols cover five diseases:
Each protocol is a reference document for veterinary and medical specialists, local authorities, sectoral agencies, research institutions and other stakeholders. The documents cover the pathogen, its impact on human health, epidemiology and epizootology, transmission routes, laboratory approaches to identifying the source of infection, clinical signs, and prevention and control measures.
The protocols are based on the results of project research, international guidance (WOAH, WHO, EFSA) and EU and Ukrainian legislation, and follow the One Health approach. Their aim is to harmonize surveillance, monitoring and control practices between Ukraine and Romania in the Lower Danube region.
The protocols were presented to the participants of the training seminar held on September 29–30, 2026 at Odesa State Agrarian University.
The project is being implemented between June 4, 2025, and December 3, 2026, and has a total value of € 418.063,41, of which € 376.257,06 is funding provided by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania-Ukraine Programme 2021- 2027.
