Within the framework of the SMS-RO-UA project “Development of Screening and Monitoring Systems for Emerging Diseases and Prevention of Cross-Border Epidemics in the Current Context,” funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine Programme 2021-2027, Odesa State Agrarian University has successfully completed the procurement and installation of specialized laboratory equipment in the framework of activity 1.2.
The modernization of the multidisciplinary laboratory of veterinary medicine represents a significant step forward in strengthening research capacity for emerging disease surveillance in the cross-border region.
The acquired specialized equipment includes: Lab Fume Hood, Laboratory Water Bath, Laboratory Centrifuge, Digital
Trinocular Stereo Zoom Microscope, Laboratory Refrigerator, Dry Heat Sterilizer, Portable Transport Laboratory Refrigerator, two Class II Biological Safety Cabinets, Laboratory Blade-Type Homogenizer, Steam Sterilizer, and Dry-Air Thermostat. This equipment will enable high-precision analysis of emerging diseases including African Swine Fever, Avian Influenza, Leptospirosis, Toxoplasmosis, and West Nile Virus in the animal-water-soil-human chain.

Additionally, essential laboratory furniture was procured to ensure optimal working conditions: three laboratory workbenches with superstructures designed for equipment placement, ten laboratory chairs, and five metal cabinets for laboratory protective clothing storage. All equipment and furniture have been installed and are currently undergoing verification procedures to obtain operational permits.
This modernization significantly enhances the laboratory’s capacity to conduct accurate molecular genetic and serological analyses, ensuring the collection of reliable data for cross-border surveillance of emerging diseases. The upgraded infrastructure will serve not only current project needs but also sustainable long-term research and monitoring activities in the Lower Danube region.
The project is being implemented between June 4, 2025, and December 3, 2026, and has a total value of € 418.063,41, of which € 376.257,06 is funding provided by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania-Ukraine Programme 2021- 2027. As a partner, total Odesa State Agrarian University eligible budget is € 144.748,80.
