Open Discussion “Blue Talks: Algae for Sustainable Development” Held at OSAU as Part of AlgaeRevive Project

On December 25, 2025, Odesa State Agrarian University hosted an online event as part of the international project “Harnessing Algae Power for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth” (Project Acronym – AlgaeRevive, Project Code – BSB00091), funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme.

The open discussion ” Blue Talk: Algae for Sustainable Development ” brought together approximately 20 participants, including representatives from government agencies, public organizations, business structures, and the scientific community. The event was held in an online conference format via the Zoom platform, ensuring broad coverage and accessibility for all interested parties.

The event provided detailed examination of key topics related to the biotechnological potential of algae. Participants discussed the classification and varieties of algae, their ecological role in the Earth’s biosphere, and their specific functioning in the Black Sea Basin, where algae perform a unique function in maintaining ecosystem stability within the limited aerobic layer. Special attention was paid to the structure, biochemistry, and physiology of algae, particularly their photosynthetic activity and capacity to produce 50–60% of global molecular oxygen.

The biotechnological application of algae took center stage in the discussion. Experts presented research on the use of algae in the agricultural sector as plant growth biostimulants, organo-mineral fertilizers, and biocontrol agents. Detailed consideration was given to the possibilities of applying the microalga Chlorella in agricultural practice, particularly its role in increasing crop yields, improving soil structure, and bioremediating wastewater.

A separate discussion was focused on innovative algae-based products for the food industry. Participants also became acquainted with the European Commission’s Bioeconomy Strategy, discussing opportunities for integrating algae technologies into the concept of sustainable development and the green economy.

OSAU specialists presented the results of their own biotechnological research conducted at the university as part of the project. In particular, results of experimental Chlorella cultivation were presented, examining the influence of nutrient media chemical composition, physical parameters, and growth stimulants on the microorganism’s development intensity.

The key objectives of the event were to enhance stakeholder capacity in implementing algae-related practices and research, as well as to promote collaboration between professionals and researchers to ensure the transfer of knowledge and skills.

The project is being implemented between September 3, 2024, and March 2, 2027, and has a total value of €1470899.04 of which €1329809.13 is funding provided by the European Union through the (Interreg VI-B) NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme. As a partner, Odesa State Agrarian University partner eligible budget is €219564,00.
