The research covered major zonal soil types, including southern chernozems and dark chestnut soils, as well as hydromorphic soils such as chestnut-meadow and meadow soils affected by mine explosions (TM-62, PMN-2) and artillery shell explosions (122 and 156 mm calibre) in combat zones within two natural zones of the right-bank part of Kherson Region. A methodology was developed for investigating craters formed by explosive devices. Based on surveys of 17 key sites and the collection of 585 soil samples, the study assessed the impact of hostilities and demining activities on soil properties and composition, including the content and spatial distribution of organic matter, exchangeable potassium, available phosphorus, nitrogen based on nitrification capacity, soil reaction, exchangeable Ca, Mg and Na, particle-size distribution and concentrations of heavy metals and other chemical elements, including Pb, Cd, Hg, Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn, Mo, As and B. The research provides scientifically substantiated information for international organizations, investors, local communities, and researchers on soil degradation processes in areas affected by hostilities. It contributes to increasing awareness among the scientific community, environmental specialists, agricultural professionals and the general public of the consequences of military activities, including explosive transformation of the soil cover and changes in the chemical composition and biological and physicochemical properties of soils in war-affected areas.

Improvement and Implementation of Modern Breeding and Selection Methods to Enhance Productive Traits in Ruminant Populations
State Registration No. 0121U113299
Implementation period: 2021–2025
Principal Investigator – Zoia YEMETS.
The research was conducted on purebred Tsigai sheep at the private enterprise “Borlak” in Bolhrad District, Odesa Region. The study involved crossing purebred Tsigai ewes with rams of the Askanian meat-and-wool breed with crossbred wool. The breeding and productive traits of the sheep were evaluated in accordance with the 2003 sheep grading and conformation assessment guidelines. Two groups of ewes were formed using the analog method. Group I (control) was mated with two Tsigai rams of the meat-and-wool type, while Group II (experimental) was mated with Askanian meat-and-wool rams with crossbred wool. All rams were typical representatives of their respective breeds, belonged to the Elite class and had wool of 48–50 microns. During mating, pregnancy, and lactation, all groups of ewes were kept in the same flock under identical feeding and housing conditions. Lambs remained in the same flock before and after weaning and were raised under identical conditions. During the lambing period, individual records were kept of ewe fertility and lamb birth weight. Lamb survival was monitored until four months of age. Changes in live weight were assessed by individual weighing at birth and at 4 and 8 months of age. Wool length was also measured in the experimental lambs at these stages.

Forecasting Changes in the Black Sea Coastal Line: A Case Study of the Odesa Region
Implementation period: 2020–2025
Principal Investigator – Oksana MALASHCHUK.
The study identified the factors influencing fluctuations in the Black Sea level and examined the historical record of Black Sea level observations. An analysis of existing approaches to monitoring changes in the Black Sea coastal line demonstrated that the primary methods involve the analysis of topographic and navigational maps from different periods, as well as aerial and satellite imagery, since the available observation points are insufficient to provide a comprehensive assessment of the condition and dynamics of changes in the respective coastal system. It was established that the accuracy of satellite imagery is sufficient for producing (2D) contour plans at a scale of 1:5,000; however, it does not provide the vertical accuracy required for this mapping scale.
