On May 23, 2024 a guest online lecture by Dr. Luca Nalbone, D.V.M., Ph.D., Senior Researcher in Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin Department of Veterinary Sciences University of Messina “Occurrence and distribution of microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment and in foods and effects on animals and humans” was held at the OSAU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Inna ZHUNKO, the Head of the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine, Assistant of the Department of Infectious Pathology, Biosafety and Veterinary-Sanitary Inspection by V. Ya. Atamas , Ph.D of biological science was the moderator of the event. Technical assistance was provided by Doctor of Philosophy in Biology, Associate Professor Oksana ZELENINA. The working language was English.
The dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ph.D of veterinary science Associate Professor Kateryna RODIONOVA and the head of the Department of Infectious Pathology, Biosafety and Veterinary-Sanitary Inspection by V. Ya. Atamas, Doctor of veterinary science, Professor Ihor PANIKAR delivered a welcoming speech.
During the lecture the following issues were considered:
- What is plastic pollution?
- Occurrence, distribution and fate of microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment.
- Microplastics and nanoplastics along the food chain: foods as a source of contamination for animals and humans.
- Effect of microplastics and nanoplastics on human and animal health: are they really a problem?
- Insights into analytical techniques for the extraction and identification of microplastics and nanoplastics in organic matrices.
The lecture was attended by almost 90 people, among them there were students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Educational and Scientific Institute of Biotechnology and Aquaculture, PhD students, specialty 211 “Veterinary Medicine”, specialty 212 “Veterinary Hygiene, Sanitation and Expertise”, the OSAU teaching staff and employees, representatives of other leading higher education institutions from Ukraine and Turkey.
At the end of the lecture, there was a lively discussion, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions and thank the lecturer for a meaningful, informative report on a very topical issue. Deputy dean for educational and methodical work, PhD of veterinary science, Mariia KHIMYCH expressed her gratitude to the Italian colleagues and hopes for further cooperation.
