On September 19, 2024 the online guest lecture by Dr. Luca Nalbone, D.V.M., Ph.D., Senior Researcher in Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin Department of Veterinary Sciences University of Messina “Updates on bacterial defence strategies (resistance, tolerance and persistence) and how these can also pose a threat to humans through food consumption” was held at the OSAU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The working language was English.
The Head of the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine, Assistant of the Department of Infectious Pathology, Biosafety and Veterinary-Sanitary Inspection by V. Ya. Atamas, Ph.D of biological science Inna Zhunko delivered a welcoming speech.
During the lecture the following issues were considered:
- Do you know how bacteria defend themselves from adverse agents?
- Key notes on bacterial growth characteristics.
- The main bacterial defence strategies: resistance, tolerance and persistence.
- “Take a nap”: dormancy as a bacterial protection mechanism.
- Insights into analytical techniques for evaluating the formation of persistent cells within a bacterial population: a phenomenological approach.
- How can bacterial defence strategies jeopardize food safety?
The lecture was attended by students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the OSAU teaching staff and employees and representative of the higher education institution from Türkiye.
After Dr. Luca Nalbone’s speech, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to the discussion. The moderator of the event Inna Zhunko expressed gratitude to the lecturer for a meaningful report and useful information on a topical issue. The armed forces of Ukraine were also thanked for their courage and heroism and hope for a personal meeting with the Italian colleagues in the near future was expressed.
