History of Department

Archival materials indicate that in 1930 there was a Department of Geodesy, which was part of the Faculty of Land Management. Her head was Professor I. Androsov. Department consisted of: Professor A. Kotomin, associate professors M. Ivanov, M. Khrennikov, B. Kozakov, O. Zagurchenko and others. The educational process was designed to give students a thorough knowledge of the subjects that provided solutions to the issues that required companies. Since all teachers had extensive experience – working in the Commissariat of Agriculture, provincial governments and research stations, – students were fully involved in extensive practical work. The staff of Department conducted extensive research work on the study of landslides in Odessa, researches of vector equilibria of triangulation. The results of researches, scientific works were published in the journal “Surveyor” and other educational and sectoral publications.

After the Second World War, the Faculty of Land Management resumed its work under the guidance of Associate Professor Kozakov B., and then professor M. Gendelman. Department of Geodesy was a part of the Faculty. During the development of virgin lands of Kazakhstan, namely in 1961, the land management faculty of the Odessa Agricultural Institute, together with the teachers and the material and technical base, was transferred to the city Akmolinsk of the Kazakh SSR. The acquisition of Independence by Ukraine and implementation of land reform have given impetus to the development of land management. That is why in 1993 training of specialists on specialty “Land Management” at the Faculty of Agronomy was renewed at the Odessa state agrarian institute. In the process of becoming a specialty and increasing the number of students already in 1996-1997, two departments were opened: geodesy (headed by associate professor                              V. Tretenkov) and land management design (headed by E. Shoyhet). In 1998, these departments merged into one name – the Department of Geodesy and Land Management and O. Vlasova became the head of the Department. In 1999, the Department of Land Management at the Faculty of Agronomy grew into an independent structure – the Faculty of Land Management, headed by Associate Professor O. Vlasova. The faculty consisted of three departments: land cadastre, land planning and department of geodesy under the management of associate professor I. Aleksandrovsky. In the period from 2002 to 2005 Department was headed by associate professor Y. Dobrozhansky. Department of Geodesy was one of the leading departments of the Institute, and since November 30, 2001 – of the University. In its structure at different times worked experienced specialists and educators: V. Suldin, M. Kostyuchek, O. Litvinenko, O. Pascal, V. Tretenkov, G. Vovkodav, V. Kukuyev, I. Kysilev, S. Moiseev, I. Litvinenko, O. Svitenko,               Y. Shpakovsky, T. Derkach, M. Shulyak, V. Kirsa, O. Melnyk. The head of the laboratory at the department were A. Reshetnikova, V. Kirsa, V. Zakharchuk. The laboratory assistants at the department were O. Temna, V. Bobkova, N. Chernega, M. Bibik.

In 2016, with the approval of the Academic Council of the Odessa State Agrarian University, the departments were reorganized, as a result of which the direction of land management added to it. O. Vlasova, O. Panasyuk, O. Cherevaty and senior laboratory assistants Y. Kapush and T. Kosmina entered the staff of high qualified scientific-pedagogical professionals and Department was renamed on Department of Geodesy and Nature Management. Since 2005 the department has been headed by Associate Professor, PhD in Military Sciences I. Alexandrovsky. Today, six PhD  work at the Department of Geodesy and Nature Management: I. Alexandrovsky, O.  Vlasova, V. Fomenko, I. Leonidova, D. Bulysheva, O. Malashchuk and senior teachers: O. Panasyuk, O. Varfolomeyeva. The Department of Geodesy and Nature Management teaches specialists at the engineering-economics and agrobiotechnological faculties. Today, teachers of the department take courses in 28 disciplines.

Since 2005 the department has introduced the organization of the educational process on the credit-modular system. Classes are held in classrooms and computer classes equipped with modern devices, tools for processing topographic field materials, creating plans and maps. The educational process is provided with the necessary electronic equipment and computer programs. Students study modern technologies of processing topographic and geodetic measurements, creation of digital plans, maintenance of land management documentation. A special type and specificity of the educational process of the Department of Geodesy and Nature Management is educational practice. The practice takes place in summer at specially prepared places. The main tasks of practice is mastering the practical skills of modern geodetic technologies and instruments. The Department of Geodesy and Nature Management is equipped with modern geodetic instruments: a set of dual-frequency GPS Leica devices, electronic tacheometers, laser roulettes, underground trackers, optical theodolites and levels, a photogrammetric station Delta (Ukraine) and a photogrammetric Leica station (Switzerland). Over the past ten years, teachers of Department have prepared more than 50 guidelines, monographs, three educational manuals, published about 100 scientific articles. Department has developed guidelines for writing diploma projects. Teachers of Department take an active part in interuniversity and international conferences.
